Market Health Affiliate Programs – Digging Deeper Into Effective Keyword Research

By JohnGibb, February 22, 2012

As you probably already know after reading this title, today I am going to go over keyword research. This is perhaps one of the most important aspects of affiliate marketing.

Even if you do find a keyword to rank for, and say you get the number one spot… if this is the wrong type of keyword, then unfortunately you may not make any money at all.

So, what kind of keyword should you go for?

Generally speaking, there are two types of keywords that Internet marketers will talk about. The first one is known as a “short tail keyword” and the second is known as a “longtail keyword”.

In my experience, and many people will agree, longtail keywords are much easier to rank for. This is because the keyword is taken as a phrase and therefore, the search engines are less likely to find the same phrase on other websites and competing domains.

Also, longtail keywords are much more effective when you consider the nature of many of these terms. For example, a buying keyword like “buy product name” is one of the best keywords that you can go for. Once you are ranking for a “buying keyword”, your visitors are ready to spend money!

They are already telling what they are interested in and pretty much on the verge of buying. All you need to do is give them a gentle push in the right direction = Kachingggg J

So, how do you go about actually searching for these keywords?

There are various tools available for you to go about researching your keywords, but luckily, Google themselves have a free keyword research tool within their Adwords sector.

Whilst the results will not give you all the competing pages (another important factor), this is a great place to start because you will find the amount of monthly searches and your potential traffic for that specific term.

If you are new to Internet marketing and would like to research some keywords, the first thing you should do is take a source keyword – this can simply be an idea…

Type this into the free tool and hit return. You will notice that your keyword also returns many other related keywords. Generally speaking, if you find high traffic keywords on the first page of results, then you might find lots of competition.

For the most effective keyword research, I always dig a little deeper until I find that sweet spot!

What is this sweet spot I’m talking about?

Aside from the longtail and buying keywords, you also need to find the type of keywords that have high monthly searches and low competing pages.

If you go for a keyword with say, 100,000 searches every single month, it would be foolish to think that no other Internet marketers would be competing for this term.

If you have little or no experience in Internet marketing, then it is definitely worthwhile to do some extensive keyword research. That sweet spot I’m talking about is a mix between a good level of monthly searches, compared to the amount of people competing for this term.

We won’t go into researching your competitors just yet – we will leave this for the next blog post…

I hope this short article on keyword research helps you understand a little bit more about marketing health affiliate program networks, and also the importance of keywords.

Thanks for reading.
